Tonik, a very successful new PPO plan available in many Anthem Blue Cross markets, has quickly become the preferred buy for the younger market.
Wellpoint and Anthem have introduced a number of new plans designed to attract the uninsured, partly to help with the uninsured problem, and of course to reach that untapped market. The plans are designed to be easy to understand, easy to afford and apply for. They have a large deductible, hence the low price, but they include benefits that many are currently going without entirely, and the approach is succeeding very well for them.
While ‘TONIK’ is only available for purchase in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, New Hampshire and Nevada. Texas and Illinois have a plan designed to mirror TONIK and is underwritten by the Unicare company. Wellpoint and Anthem often use Unicare in markets where they do not own the rights to the Blue Cross Blue Shield names.
Designed to be easy to understand, with only three options, the plans all include medical, dental and vision benefits. Application for the plans are online, and the consumer get immediate gratification, if the application is successful they get the policy number and a congratulatory welcome into the plan.
Younger buyers prefer online shopping and buying, so we expect this type of product to expand into other markets and carriers.
